Artist Statement 〰️
Bianca Black (b. 1972, South Africa) is a contemporary abstract artist based in Hoedspruit, Limpopo. Working from her studio in the South African bushveld, her practice explores instinct, memory, and mark-making through a distinctly African visual language. Black began painting in 2024 following a long career in interior design within the safari industry. Her work is characterised by bold colour, layered surfaces, and symbolic forms inspired by African rock art, folklore, landscape, and ancestral visual language. Through layered mark-making using acrylic, oil pastel, charcoal, and oil stick, she creates works that balance spontaneity with structure — playful at first glance, yet grounded in deeper explorations of identity, place, memory, and the tension between chaos and control. Influenced by the rhythms and textures of the bushveld, her paintings draw on repetition, intuitive gesture, and symbolic language to create works that feel both ancient and contemporary. Central to her practice is the idea of returning to instinct and reconnecting with a more intuitive way of seeing. Her work has been exhibited at White River Gallery, Papermoth Gallery, and internationally through a curated group exhibition at Arrival Gallery. Alongside her fine art practice, Black collaborates across textiles, wallpaper, and print design, extending her visual language beyond the canvas while maintaining a strong focus on pattern, movement, and contemporary African storytelling.
